Lawyer / Attorney Go to Business Index

Nearly every business should have a lawyer to guide and aide them in various aspects of running a business. Many people think that a lawyer’s only purpose is going to court if the occasion arises. While that may be the case in some situations it’s generally not the only time you’ll need to seek a lawyers services when it comes to you and your business.

Even if you own a relatively small business it’s wise to have a lawyer specializing in business law on your side. He or she can help you write the terms of your LLC operating agreement, a partnership agreement, franchise purchasing contract, sales or service contracts, or employee handbook. Hiring a lawyer can help you in the legal structure of your business, write well written contracts and navigate through the thousands of laws and regulations that your business could encounter.

It’s wise to establish an ongoing relationship with your lawyer so that if an event arises you can simply pick up the phone and discuss the legal matters with the them instead of having to sign a new contract each time you have a question or case.

In addition to preparing documents and contracts your lawyer can offer you legal advice on different aspects of your business. This will ensure that you are always running a business in the best legal manner possible.

When you’re selecting a lawyer for your business there are key things to expect from him or her when you choose to retain them. Always go with a lawyer that is responsive and enthusiastic about working with you. Keep in mind that you’re not only looking for a legal minded lawyer but a business advisor as well. A good business lawyer will combine the legal aspect with business advice.

Always meet directly with the lawyer that will be doing your work, I would never work with a person that I would not see on the first meeting. Ask about fees, hourly and by the project. Check their references and be looking for positive experiences with the lawyer, ask questions about the lawyers’ strengths and weaknesses.

Select a lawyer that knows the industry your business is in well and is knowledgeable with its pattern. Typically you do not want to retain a lawyer that has no knowledge of your industry thus having to pay for his time to learn. Consider the resources of the firm; basically look for one stop shopping. Finally find someone you click well with and has a personality that matches your own.

Consider the size of your business when considering an attorney. A seller who, generally, only sells a few items here or there would not typically have the need for a attorney. However, anyone who is opening a big store, or offers any kind of services will require a lawyer.

As a rule of thumb, anyone who has the need for a contract, hires any number of employees, or offers services such as building or repairing any type of item should seek an attorney from the start.
