Wholesale Sources
Wholesale sources sell merchandise below retail. They receive merchandise from vendors, distributors, and manufacturers. They are strictly in the business of "middle man" distributing. Typically, you will need a resale license/permit in order to purchase from wholesalers. Many require it, many don't. Overall, they are most likely where you are going to buy merchandise.
Surplus Sources
Surplus sources are usually dealers of merchandise that has been pulled off the shelf, used, returned, overstocked, or some other similar reason. You can find great deals in the surplus arena, but at times it can be difficult. Also, in some cases, in order to buy something, it will be in large quantities.
Closeout Merchandise
Closeout merchandise is typically what's left over from a business, items that were overstocked and never sold, discontinued items, and so on.
Bulk Merchandise
Bulk merchandise can be a mix of the above. Most of the time, items are sold in pallets, boxes, and truck loads. They can be quite profitable, but it's usually a big purchase and requires quite a bit of capital up front. Many dollar stores buy their merchandise in bulk.
